I have three words for you.
Solar Freakin’ Roadways.
Seriously. Check out the video link below.
Really?! My first reaction was “Why are we not on this already?!” Roads are such ordinary things. We all use them, walk on them and drive on them without giving a thought to them. Sure, we think lots about what is on them, we yell at other drivers, and get frustrated that this damn traffic is not allowing us to achieve our own personal goals, namely getting to where we are going in a timely fashion. The thing itself though? It is the epitome of ordinary. So ordinary that it ceases to be a consideration in our minds. With this technology, and enough people getting behind it, we can transform what is inefficient into an energy creating, tax saving, job creating workhorse that serves the whole entire world.
Think about all the money we spend on waging war as a nation, and as a global society. Deeper than that, think about how much of our mental efforts we expend justifying that expenditure by making ourselves right. “They” are barbarians. “They” need to be stopped. “We”, as the morally superior culture must stop them. We fail to see how we ourselves contribute to the problem, and spend time, energy and money placing value judgements on groups of people, and belief structures that differ from our own. Things do not happen in a vacuum. We are all so busy puling examples from the past to justify our present behaviour that we spend little to no time thinking about how our present actions can influence the future. We fail to see our own part in it, and indeed our own failings.
All this money, time and effort that we spend destroying each other and ourselves could be so much more productively spent if we could just open our eyes, and worry about fixing ourselves. Now, I have been called out on this recently, obviously I do not think that killing anyone in the name of religion is right. I also do not think that bombing those who do this is the solution. I feel that it makes us just as guilty as “they” are because we are also killing people in the name of an ideology. As my mom always told me, two wrongs do not make a right. We have forgotten the foibles and failures of our past that have contributed to the problems that we face today.. This is problem focussed thinking and it will lead to nothing but more problems. I humbly suggest that we all turn our attention to ourselves, our own thoughts, actions and choices as individuals and as a collective culture and focus on creating the future that we want instead of obliterating a past that reminds us that we are so fatally flawed.
I am asking you to become conscious of things that you make a habit of giving no thought to. It is in doing this that we collectively can harness the power to create the future that we want to see for ourselves, our children, and all of humanity.
Something as ordinary as a road can be turned into something with extraordinary potential.
