One of my favorite writers Brene Brwon said that when you do something vulnerable, like share a post on the internet that scares the crap out of you, you end up stuck between two gremlins. Their names are “Not Good Enough” and “Who Do You Think You Are?”
You did it, you posted the thing that made you want to shit your pants. And while you’re super proud, you’re also feeling like your walking naked through a briar patch. You feel VULNERABLE.
Totally understandable, totally normal.
Most, if not all, people who step into leadership experience this. You get stopped by “Not Good Enough”, and then you look that little bugger in the face, give it the finger and hit publish anyway. Good. Step one done.
Step two is facing “Who Do You Think You Are?”
Too big for your britches, presumptuous, not smart enough, or educated enough, or credentialed enough. Not strong enough to take the blowback. Not ready to be out there. Who do you think you are? Some kind of expert? Pssh. No one is going to listen to you. You’re full of shit anyway, right?
This little bastard is the gatekeeper to growth. It pops up to ensure that you stay safe. It’s not wrong that it’s shown up, you haven’t screwed up. You can listen to what it’s saying and crawl back into your hole if you like, or you can observe that it has shown up because you have stepped outside your comfort zone, done a crazy thing that might change the world a little bit, put yourself out there and taken a chance on your dreams.
And then KEEP GOING.
The truth of the matter is that you can do this. You want to do this. This scares you, yes, and we covered why that’s awesome in the previous post. It is also critical that you KEEP GOING.
My beloved change maker, the world needs you. You know where we stand, and change is not going to come from the top down. Not the kind of change you want anyhow. The change you want, the change you crave, the new world that you know in your soul is possible needs YOU. It needs your courage and your vulnerability and your action. It needs your work, and your words, and your mission.
We need you. I need you.
Doubt yourself, that’s ok, but don’t let your doubt stop you.
If you don’t follow me on Instagram yet, please do. I share lots of vulnerable stuff over there, and I post daily to help you get into action.
I am right there with you, cheering you on, believing in you until you are ready to believe in yourself.
YOU GOT THIS.
