The “Three Pillars” Exercise

When you are writing for a business, it’s really easy to get overwhelmed. Let’s face it, not everyone finds writing easy, and a business needs lots of content. Sure, you’re a legendary massage therapist, or a sublime reiki master, or a powerful coach, but you just don’t feel it when it comes to sitting down to write your monthly email newsletter. When it comes to writing that blog that you keep meaning to start, your brain shuts down and you sit staring at an empty screen until you get so annoyed that you shut your laptop and go clean your bathroom.

You could also have the opposite problem, your mind could be so full of ideas that you don’t ever sit down at the keyboard because you don’t know where to begin.

It’s not just you.

I have talked to so many people who are incredible biz owners, and they find the writing part of the program to be a real challenge.

I have an exercise that I love which helps solve this problem.

You have a bunch of reasons you got into business, right? And I am talking the deep in your heart, passion reason that you are doing this, not the ones that you put in your advertisements. This is where the clarity is going to come.

Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen. You can do this at your keyboard if you really want, but there is something magical about pen to paper, and I find it brings much more powerful outcomes. Set a timer for five minutes and free write about your business, why you started it, what you bring to the table and what you want your clients to get out of working with you.

When you’re done, pull out a highlighter and read it over looking for patterns. Words that repeat, or are in the same theme area, write those down.

Now, see if you can narrow those words down to three.

These are your three pillars.

These will help you to narrow your focus when it comes to writing for your business.  You can use them to guide your writing in a newsletter, or help you narrow down ideas for a blog post. You can even use them to sort your post it’s when you do “The Post It Exercise”.

I would love to do this exercise with you. Send me an email at stephanie.a.renaud@gmail.com and we’ll schedule a call. I love chatting with you 🙂
